Official Paddler Status

PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO CURRENT LOCATION LOGISTICS, KAYAK OP STATUS IS SUSPENDED UNTIL NBCB MOVES INTO ITS NEW BOATHOUSE, OR FURTHER NOTICE.

In New York City, it can be quite difficult and often expensive to own, store, and transport a personal boat. As a community boating organization, we aim to lessen such burdens through sharing resources. Obtaining ‘Official Paddler’ status at NBCB gives members access to our fleet of kayaks and canoes for personal use, outside of scheduled events. Official Paddlers do not have to be accompanied by a NBCB Trip Leader and are allowed to have one, non-member or member guest.

To become an official club paddler, applicants must:

  • Be a current NBCB member.

  • Paddle with us a minimum of 5 trips.

  • Complete assessment of level 2 skills by American Canoe Association or equivalent.

  • Review and pass our local waterway knowledge test.

  • Plan and lead a trip under the supervision of a NBCB Trip Leader.

  • All Official Paddlers must be active volunteers. Significant volunteer work is required to maintain Official Paddler privileges.

The process is meant to educate and engage a broader audience that can in turn help others get on the water in an easy and responsible fashion.
